Archie Dickens
Archie Dickens, born in June of 1907 as Archie Bernard Dickens, lived a hard life as the son of a boot maker clicker. He was born in London, and at an early age, he showed significant art skill. Both he and his sister loved art, and they planned to attend the Slade School of Art together. Although we know that he was a pin up artist, this is not all he did his entire life. Since his father became sick, he could not attend school with his sister. At the age of fourteen, he stopped his education and began to work to keep his family together.
In 1937, he moved to New Zealand. By this time, he was thirty years old and ready to start his career. He joined an advertising agency in Auckland. It was here that he began to start his career in art. Although he spent some of his time working on pin up art, it was not in high demand. Because of this, he would simply do what he was told. He worked on greeting cards in order to support himself.
In 1939, he felt he needed to move to Australia to get away from World War II. After moving here, Archie Bernard Dickens finally began to receive a break. He began to work for a studio. He was in Australia when his pin up art finally became popular. In Australia, his pin up art was in high demand, and he met and married the love of his life. However, he was required to join the Australian Army.
After he served his time, he left Australia and purchased a house in Acacia Gardens. This is located in West Wickam, Kent. He built a studio on this property, and it was there that he worked on his pin up art.
He is mostly known for illustration glamour calendar art. His technique is best described as easel painting. He illustrates with watercolour, and his art is always a representation of realistic models. He has had a fascination with drawing innocent women in innocent situations that are not that innocent. Perhaps this is why so many people find his art appealing. In fact, even the British Prime Minister Tony Blair was seen with a Paul Smith designer shirt that portrayed artwork of Archie Dickens.
